Artist Bio: James Russo

I graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martin's School of Art & Design in 2012.
All of my paintings on this website have been produced since 2021, when I committed fully to being an artist.

In my work I explore what it feels like to be human- relationships, inner states, longing and connection being the main motifs.

I take in a variety of influences from the abstract paintings of Paul Klee and the rich colours of Japanese 'ukiyo-e' prints to the playfulness of Matisse's cut-out works.

I paint mainly in acrylic on canvas using vibrant colours to create a heightened, magical reality. In each piece however I am trying to convey something honest about my specific human experience, not in spite of but because of the surreal landscapes and figures I use.

Painting allows me to express my internal world; in it's artifice lies a truthful reflection of the human condition.
